In May 2018, Merck KGaA opened their new Innovation Center right in the heart of their corporate headquarters in Darmstadt. The chemical and pharmaceutical company is considered as the world leader in the field of liquid crystal display. Based on that, the high affinity to digital media is reflected in a creative way in the design and the equipment of the Innovation Center.
As a central element, a large-scale kinetic display installation named “Inspiration Wall” gives an unmistakable identity to the foyer of the Innovation Center. The installation covers a slightly convex wall, almost 18 metres long, and consists of 24 rows, each with three monitors that can be moved individually on a vertical axis.
The monitors were specially developed and manufactured by eyevis based on the requirements of Merck. In addition to the mechanical particularities, the requirements for brightness (2500nit), resolution (Full-HD) and the signal chain were implemented with special scaler boards. The raw panels of the monitors were developed in cooperation with the by Merck demanded Asian manufacturer AUO, which ensured that the LCD screens were based on liquid crystals from the producer in Darmstadt.
The architecture firm HENN was responsible for the planning of the Innovation Center. HENN found a partner for the design of the Inspiration Wall in the ART + COM Studios based in berlin, who is specialized in the creation of media installations and rooms. ART + COM developed a special software for this, which controls the movement of the displays and their use of moving images depending on their position. For the technical elaboration the media technology planner “medienprojekt p2” from Stuttgart got involved and the partner “schnellbuntebilder” from Berlin assisted for interactive content. The sophisticated mechanics and control technology, which enables a gentle wave movement of the display rows, was developed in cooperation with MKT AG from Olching near Munich, which is one of the worldwide market leaders for the development and realization of kinetic and interactive exhibits.
